www.durianpalace.com

i came across this fruit today at the asian supermarket around the corner. i am very intrigued. the" king of fruits"????
i quote:
"For those who have never heard of this fruit, the durian is a weird looking, strong smelling fruit that grows in South-East Asia. It resembles a spiked American football, is brown (almost yellow when ripe), and its smell has been compared to a sewage tank. The fruit separates into five segments, after being split open. The meat of the fruit is a creamy substance surrounding the chestnut-like seeds. The edible part of the durian has been compared in taste to cheese cake, onion flavored custard, or chocolate mousse."
"The durian fruit is covered in spikes, and a single fruit can be as heavy as a bowling ball. The fruits fall from the tree when ripe, and they have been known to kill people who are standing beneath them."
"Inside the fruit, which ranges in color from green to brown, there are five sections of yellowish to white blobs, filled with big brown seeds. The appearance of this is a bit unappealing to the durian novice. It looks a bit like raw chicken; however, it is anything but animal! The durian is like no other fruit in more ways than one. All durians have a custard-like consistency and can taste sweet or even nutty. My first reaction to the taste was one of surprise more than pleasure. It tasted like sweet, garlic pudding!"

Rauschenburg with Iris

I found this old Rauschenburg print tucked in a book that belonged to my grandma Alice, in the attic in KW. We bought these Irises on a very rainy saturday at the farmers market in silverlake.

christmas eve

I like tropical Christmas

OH MY GOD!!!! It was so great to see these girls I grew up with. Most i havent seen since i was 12, some even longer...

and Marcela! We were VP and PRES of the GPA ( umm, the Global Peoples Association doncha know) in middle school and I hadn't seem her since...I am so happy she lives in LA now too....

Merry Merry

the evening started off with the best fish tacos ever at the Old Town Mexican cafe on Duval St.-- a restaurant owned by my parents old friend Gail, who owned a restuarant called Las Palmas, which my mom was a cook at when she was pregnant with me, and whose kitchen i seem to have faint recollections of as a toddler, also the Lighthouse restaurant, which my dad played piano at in partial exchange for dinners, in which i would always every time order the stuffed artichoke. YUM!!!

my mom taking in the splendorous christmas tree at the Rooftop cafe, while my favorite musicians play on in the backround.

after the Rooftop we went to a play at the Waterfront theatre, The Graduate, starring our dear friend Diana Verlain(second from the left- she was fabulous) as the tawdry Mrs. Robinson. It was SO FUNNY. then all of us headed to the charming new Tropic Cinema for some after hours wine .....

....which led to this.....

Key West Cemetary

Its one of the more peaceful places on the island, with tropical folwering bushes and trees and a hen with her new born chicks scurrying around the graves. I've always been charmed by the place- it has a feeling about it that is different to me than other grave yards. except at night....I could never imagine living next to the graveyard at night.... I was born a block away from the cemetary on Ashe St.

sunset at Fort Zachary Taylor

I used to run around this fort with my friends growing up. the best for playing hide and seek.

my parents Anne and Richard and godfather Skipper in the middle

Holiday!

i flew Southwest and i feel like writing to the company and gushing about there new logo! i love it! winged heart!!! i mean, my dad was in the original Winged Heart band back in the day when i used to sleep under speakers....but thats another story...these pics were taken after 17 hours in the minivan, driving from North Carolina to Key West, we stopped about 30? miles up at the Bahia Honda State park, dipped our toes in the water and took pictures on the bridge. I'd like to line up all the family photos we've taken on that bridge over the years.it would be quite a chronology.....
